Tax
Key strengths
Brodies tax team offers clients a exceptional breadth and depth of expertise, which is unsurpassed in the Scottish legal marketplace. We provide stand-alone tax planning and compliance advice in personal and business tax matters, as well as comprehensive transactional support.
Expertise
Our team, led by well-known Scottish tax experts Isobel d'Inverno and Alan Barr, includes solicitors, chartered accountants and chartered tax advisors. This blend of experience and specialist skills enables us to provide clients with pragmatic and technically astute advice. We know how important tax is to our clients, but we also understand how tax considerations must fit within a broader commercial picture.
Particular areas of expertise include vendor tax planning, structuring property joint ventures, Stamp Duty Land Tax mitigation, VAT planning, the Construction Industry Scheme, employment-related tax issues and share option schemes. We advise on the tax aspects of company acquisitions, disposals and reconstructions, complex commercial property transactions and PFI / PPP projects and, particularly in recent years, we have been heavily involved in the tax optimisation of insolvency-related transactions and restructurings.
We are also regularly instructed by accountancy and other legal firms to provide tax consultancy services, particularly in relation to property tax issues.
What we can do for you
We can provide tax advice on any area of your personal or business activities. As well as offering tailored tax planning and compliance solutions, we work closely in partnership with other departments to provide a seamless service for our clients.
Unusually for a law firm, we also offer a full tax due diligence service, which means that Brodies is one of the few Scottish law firms capable of providing a comprehensive, one-stop-shop transactional service - we can even help you with your tax returns.
Did you know...?
Our team is closely involved in a number of tax consultation groups, which liaise with HM Revenue & Customs on the development of tax policy. Team members sit on the Law Society of Scotland Tax Committee (of which Isobel d'Inverno is also Convenor), the Stamp Taxes Practitioners Group, the Scottish Property Federation and the Stamp Duty Land Tax Working Together Group.
As a result, we are able to offer our clients cutting edge and innovative advice, helping them to navigate their way through increasingly uncertain economic waters.
