Michael is one of the most respected and well known banking lawyers in the country, and is our Head of Energy and Infrastructure Finance.
He has over 30 years' experience of a wide range of banking and finance transactions in Scotland and in England - including acquisition finance, development finance, funds finance, real estate finance and project finance. He has also advised on many sales and purchases of loan books and on financial restructuring and work-out exercises.
Michael has a particular focus through his project finance skills in the following specialist areas:
- Energy, including oil and gas, renewable energy and waste to energy
- Infrastructure, in sectors such as healthcare, education, transport, waste, water, defence, marine, and leisure
- Housing, particularly social and mid-market housing finance and stock transfers
- Public Sector - a wide range of government grants and guarantees, development facilities, and financing models such as Tax Incremental Financings and Growth Accelerators
He has recently been seconded into the Scottish Government to advise them on financial innovation models designed to encourage alternative credit providers to make finance available for infrastructure and housing projects.
Michael is the only recommended project finance expert for Scotland in the International Who's Who Directory of Business Lawyers, is identified as a leading individual for banking and finance by both Chambers and the Legal 500 Directories, and has been the author of the Introduction to PFI/Project Finance section of the Butterworths PFI Manual.
The Legal 500 (2015) cite Michael as a "key name for project finance, particularly public sector projects".
