Managing Partner since 1998, Bill, who joined Brodies in 1980, took on the role with the objective of modernising the business whilst maintaining and building Brodies' strong reputation for quality in both legal advice and service delivery. Re-elected for a seventh consecutive term in 2016 by his partners, that mission holds good today. The firm advises clients in all key sectors of the Scottish economy, such as financial services, life sciences, public services and energy, renewables, high-end outsourcing, transport, real estate, rural business and agriculture, fisheries and higher education.
Under his leadership the firm has grown from around 175 to more than 640 partners and staff, while turnover has built year on year from a base of £8 million in 1998/99 to £65.1 million in 2015/16. During that time Brodies has led the way in LLP conversion, sought to embed transparency in its reporting to stakeholders and won numerous awards including Scotland Law Firm of the Year 2016 at the Who's Who Legal Awards, the UK Regional Firm of the Year at the 2016 The Lawyer Awards, the UK National/Regional Law Firm of the Year at the 2015 Legal Business Awards, UK Law Firm of the Year at the British Legal Awards 2014.
