Alan specialises in professional negligence, construction and commercial disputes on behalf of insurer, corporate and partnership clients, and heads up Brodies' Professional Negligence Unit. He has over 25 years’ experience of handling claims involving engineers, architects, surveyors, solicitors, accountants, brokers and IFA's (Independent Financial Adviser’s) as well as construction industry contractors, and has also had responsibility for teams handling occupational disease claims for employers. He has a keen commercial eye for knowing when litigation is in a client's best interests and when they should steer well clear of the often choppy waters of the Court process and use alternative, solution driven approaches.
Alan has a special interest in mediation and ADR (Alternative Dispute Resolution) in all his areas of specialism and is a member of the Forum of Insurance Lawyers (FOIL) and was formerly the Scottish member with responsibility for reporting on professional indemnity matters. He is also a member of the Chartered Insurers Institute (CII) and the WS Society, and is a frequent speaker in relation to liability and litigation issues in Scotland.
Alan is named as notable practitioner for Professional Negligence work by Chambers & Partners and The Legal 500.
He is described as "very able and very clever" as well as "easy to deal with”
