Traineeships

At Brodies you can expect to work in an environment that is challenging and rewarding. You will get exposure to quality clients and some of Scotland's leading lawyers.

Recruiting, retaining and training the best legal talent is fundamental to the success of our business. We do not seek to hire a 'typical' Brodies lawyer but instead place a huge amount of importance in securing people who clearly demonstrate great potential for the future. There has never been a better time to join Brodies as demonstrated by the recent opening of our Glasgow office and the increased challenges and opportunities that will bring us all.

A traineeship at Brodies will provide you with the right skills base to develop your career. It will equip you with the legal expertise and acumen necessary to become a solicitor who can provide the legal service our clients are looking for. During your traineeship you will experience work in a minimum of three business areas and you will work from both our Edinburgh and Glasgow offices. We have seats in Litigation, Employment, Property, Corporate and Private Client. Through these departments you can gain exposure to specialisms such as Banking, IP/IT, Construction, Projects and Family Law. All of our trainees are expected to do seats in Property which is our largest, market leading department. You will also have access to a quality IT system that exploits IT to meet the needs of the clients and the firm.

What we look for in applicants

Academic ability
Academic ability is important to us. We look for consistently high levels of achievement at Higher Grade and throughout your degree. This means good marks for each year at university and a majority of good Higher grades.

Quality and Delivery
Our philosophy is to develop lawyers to deliver to clients just what they need just when they need it. We are committed to producing work of the highest quality often bringing creative solutions to the ever-increasing complexity of clients business objectives. This means that we expect you to demonstrate that you can think clearly, explain issues in simple terms, solve complex problems and think 'out of the box'.

Drive and Initiative
Our clients single us out for our pro-activity, pragmatism and appetite to understand their business and its needs. We expect you to be pro-active, enthusiastic and demonstrate a 'can do' attitude whilst working to tight deadlines.

Teamwork and Adaptability
Brodies is home to a significant number of Scotland's most highly rated legal experts and these individuals have built formidable teams across each of our core business areas. You can expect to work in some of these teams throughout your traineeship. You will therefore have the ability to interact well with a wide range of people and contribute.

Commercial and Client Awareness
Our prominence as a commercial law firm means that we have a diverse client portfolio and work in all of the key business areas that are important to the Scottish economy. We need you to demonstrate that you have a genuine interest in the client and the potential to develop a strong commercial focus. We recognise that at this stage you may have limited commercial exposure but we will be looking for some evidence of this through your activities and interests.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills
Brodies is a progressive independent commercial law practice with ambitious growth plans for the future. We are committed to being the law firm our clients want us to be. We need you to demonstrate that you are highly articulate and can develop strong and effective relationships.
