We work with our clients across the UK and Ireland to help shape and deliver their public/private projects. With the role of private finance in the delivery of new public assets increasingly being questioned, we guide the structuring, value for money and transaction delivery, working efficiently to minimise transaction risk and cost.

We deliver value to our clients through:

  • A strong emphasis on teamwork with our clients and the other key counterparties in a project, with a collaborative result
  • Talented senior individuals with deep knowledge of leading and winning consortium bids and of the optimal financing solution
  • A real understanding of the public sector’s aims and concerns, and top expertise on procurement, state aid and value for money
  • A 'can-do' innovative approach which addresses and solves problems that arise on projects

Our team covers all key economic and social infrastructure and all aspects of the lifecycle of a project – from early stage inception, to land rights assembly, to project completion and then effective delivery of the operational phase.

This is coupled with sound project management techniques with fast and efficient delivery of legal advice in a clear, understandable format, good liaison with other advisers (such as technical and insurance), and transparency on pricing and billing to avoid nasty surprises.

Recent work highlights include advising:

  • Renfrewshire Council as lead authority, in partnership with Glasgow City Council, on the proposed tram/train rail link between Glasgow Central Station and Glasgow Airport under the Glasgow City Regional City Deal.
  • Abellio Rail Cymru joint venture on its bid for the Wales & Borders Franchise and Metro, being procured by Transport for Wales.
  • Aberdeen City Council on the market-first £370 million issue of rated and listed bonds to finance its capital investment programme, including the development of a new Aberdeen Exhibition & Conference Centre for the city.
  • a bidder on the €300m Irish Social Housing PPP programme which forms part of the Irish Government's National Development Plan 2018-2027.

The range of specialist skills that Brodies provided covered every aspect we required, and gave us clear guidance on what needed to be done internally to ensure the success of the deal.

Carlo Grilli, Senior Commercial Legal Adviser, Aberdeen City Council
